NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

Bathroom

Its October, and NKBA’s Kitchen and Bath Month... what better time for all of us to promote our services. Be sure to check the national NKBA website for tips on how to promote OCTOBER in your specific business.

The 12th Kitchen and Bath Masters, Golf Tournament was a smashing success this year, which is noted in a special appreciation clip for all who participated in trumping things up in the : planning, donating , and sponsoring of this fine event which took place September 18, 2009, at Alberta Springs Golf Course in Red Deer Alberta.

Be sure to checkout all the DESIGN Contests .. lots to choose from, but note the dates are coming up fast!
Buildex/ Design Trends, this is the first year NKBA is participating in the tradeshow, with a speaker sponsored by national NKBA. Be sure to attend ...Sara Ann Busby’s lecture.

A booth by: Prairie Provinces Chapter will be manned by the various Executive and Board Buddies to promote NKBA memberships, stop by and enter the draw for a free one year membership.

Our AGM is in November this year – not October - as previously listed. This will be a special AGM as we are blessed with having Sara Ann Busby, as our EXCO speaker for the evening.

Fall is truly a busy time of the year as we prepare for Thanksgiving Holiday, with our families and friends. It’s truly a time to appreciate all our connections to each other, a time to affirm that we give to each other on a daily basis in various ways. As you read thru the e-news today be sure to search for that special note, I have for you as always.

Making Green Kitchen & Bath Design Work for Everyone

Green Design continues to grow in popularity in the kitchen and bath industry, as well as with residential homeowners and commercial builders. The demand to create eco-friendly and healthy kitchens and baths that don’t sacrifice style or comfort has reached the mainstream and is spreading to all segments of the industry. This program is designed to help fellow professionals understand their options for creating more energy efficient living spaces. What is our responsibility as manufacturers, specifiers and designers to use products that are environmentally responsible and how can we convince the end user that this is an important and cost-efficient decision to make? Join Sara to learn how to work together to find the balance between the dream and the reality of Green Design.

The NKBA Prairie Province Chapter was very pleased to see such a great turnout at our annual Golf Tournament at Alberta Springs. Thanks to all that came out for a fun day of golf and socializing.

We’d like to express our appreciation to the volunteers and board members for helping put together a fun day of golf. Even though we had a few unexpected hurdles to deal with we managed to exceed our goal and we look forward to a substantial donation for The Children’s Wish Foundation.

A big thank you to Kyla Martin of The Children’s Foundation for stopping by to give a presentation. Kyla shared some stories of the dreams they help fulfill. Thank you to everyone that showed up to support such a great organization.

We have started planning next year’s tournament and look forward to seeing everyone there again.

Opportunities to be a 'Board Buddy' we have coined that term as it reflects the position exactly. As a volunteer, you are able to team up in one of the positions which one of the board members currently have and help execute duties thereby learning the position. Once that postion becomes available you are the perfect position to run for that officers seat. Great opportuities exist when vollenteering on the NKBA board, just ask one of the board members. Ask Nora how she did it! See contact info below execultive list.

Study Group Sessions

In September, your local chapter will be starting a study group program for industry professionals who are interested in sitting for the exams in March 2010. The study group is based on the 9 volumes of the Professional Resource Library: Residential Construction, Kitchen and Bath Systems, Kitchen and Bath Products, Kitchen and Bath Drawing, Kitchen Planning, Bath Planning, Business Management, Kitchen and Bath Project Management, and Design Principles.

The study group will meet approximately every two weeks for approximately 2 or 3 hours. It is a commitment, and a worthwhile one. Research has shown that the percentage of professionals who pass the NKBA certification exams on the first try is substantially higher among those who participate in a study group.

At each session we will review one of the books in the Professional Resource Library, and we will be arranging a presenter/facilitator with expertise in that area. We also have quizzes and flashcards with practice questions. Where possible we can try to arrange visits to manufacturing facilities or kitchen & bath showrooms.

In order to participate in the study group and prepare for the exams, you will need to have access to the 9-volume Professional Resource Library. Members of a study group are able to obtain the full set for the discounted price of USD$425 rather than the regular USD$499 (plus customs and shipping charges).

As part of the study program, we have also requested a Certification Prep Course for the end of January. In addition to providing additional help in preparing for the exams, the course will also allow you to fulfill the education requirement for certification.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Jolanda Slagmolen-Flores at (403) 255-8234 or casaflores@telus.net to request a registration form.
